Discipleship Training School

A Discipleship Training School (DTS) is YWAM’s flagship training program—a 5-6 month immersive experience that helps you grow in your relationship with God, discover your calling, and get equipped for missions and service.

It’s the gateway course for anyone who wants to join YWAM long-term or take part in many of its secondary schools like the Discipleship Bible School (DBS) or School of Evangelism (SOE).

Phase 1: Lecture Phase

Held at a YWAM base, this is an intensive time of learning, community, and personal growth.

Weekly Topics Often Include:

  • Hearing God’s voice

  • The Father heart of God

  • Identity in Christ

  • Missions and evangelism

  • Holy Spirit and spiritual gifts

  • Biblical worldview

  • Relationships and purity

  • Lordship of Christ

Activities Include:

  • Daily worship and prayer

  • Lectures by experienced teachers

  • Small group discussions

  • Personal mentoring

  • Local outreach

Phase 2: Outreach Phase

A cross-cultural mission trip, usually overseas, where you put into practice what you’ve learned.

Typical Activities:

  • Evangelism (street ministry, drama, music, testimonies)

  • Mercy ministry (orphans, refugees, disaster relief)

  • Teaching or preaching

  • Partnering with churches or ministries

Discipleship Bible School

A Discipleship Bible School (DBS) in YWAM is a 12-week intensive Bible course designed to help students engage deeply with the entire Bible, understand its unified story, and apply its truth to their lives and ministry.

It is a second-level school in YWAM, meaning you must first complete a Discipleship Training School (DTS) to enroll.

Key Features of the DBS:

1. Whole Bible Overview

  • You read through every book of the Bible—from Genesis to Revelation—in 3 months.

  • The Bible is studied in chronological order to see the full narrative arc of Scripture.

2. Inductive Bible Study Method

  • You learn how to study the Bible for yourself using observation, interpretation, and application.

  • You’re taught how to let the Bible speak instead of relying only on commentaries or sermons.

3. Lectures and Small Groups

  • Daily lectures from experienced Bible teachers.

  • Small groups for discussion, reflection, and accountability.

4. Themes and Application

  • Each week focuses on major biblical themes like covenant, kingdom, grace, leadership, missions, etc.

  • You’re constantly challenged to apply what you learn to your personal life and calling.

5. Community and Worship

  • Living in a YWAM community with worship, intercession, and outreach opportunities integrated into the school rhythm.

This classification affects tuition pricing, outreach budgeting, and other financial considerations, especially for Discipleship Training Schools (DTS) and outreach phases.

    The Three Main YWAM Country Categories:

    1. Category A (High Income Countries):

      • Examples: United States, Canada, Australia, United Kingdom, Germany, Japan.

      • Students from these countries usually pay the full tuition and outreach fees.

    2. Category B (Middle Income Countries):

      • Examples: Brazil, Mexico, South Africa, Philippines.

      • Students from these countries often receive a moderate discount or adjusted pricing.

    3. Category C (Low Income Countries):

      • Examples: Nepal, Ethiopia, Myanmar, some parts of Central Africa.

      • Students may receive the highest level of financial assistance or adjusted pricing.
